What type of fuel tank should I have?

I’m Tom and I’ve been working with boats my whole life. I specialise in RIBs. Today I’d like to talk to you about fuel tanks. You’ve got two options on your RIB. There are removable tanks, which are normally plastic, or your built-in tanks which tend to be metal. Plastic tanks are great if you want that flexibility of being able to fill up anywhere you can. Just unclip the tank and take it to the petrol station. If you run out of fuel you can quite quickly switch to another one. The downside is their capacity tends to be limited normally to about 25 litres, but that’s quite heavy to carry still,  so you need to think about that.

Inboard fuel tanks will carry far more fuel. The disadvantage is that you need to be somewhere close to a filling station either on the water or in the marina. The real benefit though of that inboard fuel tank is that it will carry more fuel so for bigger engines and longer journeys you’ve got that capacity. The center of gravity is also really low so that tank’s built into the hull of the boat, so that’s fantastic for performance.
